Bacopa is an herb originally from India and a component of many ancient Ayurvedic formulations. Its use, dating back to 2,500 BC, includes a tonic formula to stimulate cognitive function and prolong longevity.

Numerous clinical studies have been conducted to evaluate bacopa’s benefits on brain health and cognitive function (1-8). Bacopa extracts have been clinically demonstrated to improve cognition, particularly speed of attention, in healthy individuals. Bacosides, key compounds present in bacopa, are being investigated for their neuroprotective effects and ability to modulate the brain neurotransmitters acetylcholine and serotonin (1, 7).

Nutritional Support for a Sharp Mind

Finding optimal nutritional support is a step in the right direction when it comes to preserving the brain health and memory of an aging population. Although several biomedical research groups are working on understanding brain function, designing a medicine for cognitive support has not yet been possible. Ancient practices have a different perspective and solution. An Ancient Nootropic Herb

Bacopa monnieri (L.) Wettst, is an ancient herb also known as thyme-leaved gratiola or brahmi (10, 11, 12). The plant is found in warm, marshy wetland areas, including India, East Asia, Australia, and the United States (11, 12, 13). Bacopa is a member of the plantain family, Plantaginaceae (4), a key ingredient in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (10, 12).

The ancient Ayurvedic books Caraka Samhita (2,500 B.C.), the Sushruta Samhita (2,300 B.C.) and the Indian Materia Medica, give account of bacopa’s many benefits as a tonic to support intellectual activity (10, 11). In modern scientific literature, bacopa is defined as a nootropic substance (11, 14, 15, 16, 17), from the Greek “nous” meaning “mind” and “trepein” meaning “to bend.” Nootropics improve cognitive function, particularly executive functions, memory, creativity, or motivation. This help protect the brain from chemical and physical assaults, and increases the efficacy of neuronal firing control mechanisms in cortical and sub-cortical regions of the brain.

Key Components Found in Bacopa

Researchers have found a unique chemical class of triterpenoid saponins, the bacosides, (16). Bacosides are unique to this plant’s genera and their content is used in the quality control of the herb (8). The physiological role that bacosides play in bacopa benefits is beginning to be understood (11, 16, 18). Bacoside A and bacoside B, steroidal compounds in nature, seem to be essential for the neuroprotective and neuromodulating effects of bacopa extracts (7).

Bacopa extract benefits are demonstrated in preclinical tests and clinical trials

Bacopa extracts have been reported to have many actions on in vitro and animal studies, protecting brain cells from oxidative stress and modulating the formation of essential brain chemicals (6, 16). Animals given bacopa extracts show benefits in motor learning, acquisition, retention, and delay extinction of newly acquired behaviors (16). Numerous clinical trials with bacopa have now been published (1-9).

Australia is the leading country on the clinical trials effort, conducting most recent randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies under the supervision of Dr. Con Stough, director of the Swinburne Centre for Neuropsychology University in Melbourne and Director of the National Institute of Complementary Medicine (NICM) Collaborative Centre for the Study of Herbal and Natural Medicines for Neurocognition (2-6).

Australian clinical trials have shown bacopa benefits on human cognition and as a neuroprotective and memory enhancer (1-8). The combined results of these trials suggest bacopa works in complementary pathways in the brain providing an integral protection and neuromodulation, improving cognition (7). The mechanism of action of bacopa includes inhibition of free radicals responsible of causing harm to brain cells. It also works as both an inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase and as an activator of choline acetyltransferase, two key enzymes modulating brain’s activity (16, 18). The result is that the neurotransmitter acetylcholine is increased supporting a sharp memory and retention (16, 18).

Why Nitrate-Rich Shots Work for Cardiovascular Fitness

Studies have consistently shown that using nitrate-rich vegetable concentrates or shots, such as AMPED™ NOx, can improve cardiovascular fitness and exercise performance.

Now a group of scientists from the Netherlands suggests that there’s an obvious reason for these performance benefits—we’re just not getting enough vegetables in our diets daily.

In a recent review paper, researchers pointed out that our main supply of dietary nitrates comes from either green leafy or root vegetables, yet most of us don’t receive enough to see benefits (1). “The proposed benefits of dietary nitrate supplementation may very well be observed because a healthy diet is not yet achieved in most people,” the authors reported. They reasoned that the reported benefits of nitrate supplementation are likely observed because habitual nitrate intake is so low.

Despite the accumulating evidence supporting the health benefits of consuming more vegetables, the actual vegetable intake remains well below the levels proposed in multiple dietary guidelines (2). In fact, the average intake levels of vegetables has declined markedly over the past 30 years worldwide (3).

The consumption of sufficient amounts of vegetables is a cornerstone of a healthy diet and has been shown to contribute to the prevention of chronic metabolic diseases (4). There are several different classes of biologically active compounds in vegetables that impart beneficial effects, including vitamins, trace minerals, and dietary fibers to name a few (4).  Some of the most healthful vegetables, including spinach, arugula, lettuce, and beetroot contain high levels of nitrate (5).

While not a replacement for vegetable intake, supplementation with dietary nitrate has some notable advantages. Dietary nitrate supplementation has become a popular area of research with several publications reporting benefits to the cardiovascular system (6). It has also been reported to enhance muscle efficiency and fatigue resistance in both healthy and unhealthy individuals (1).

Consuming nitrates from food or dietary supplements increase the bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO) in the blood stream. NO has multiple functions in the body that may influence health and performance, including the regulation of blood flow, muscle contractility, glucose and calcium homeostasis, and mitochondrial respiration and biogenesis (7-9

In comparison to synthetic versions of nitrates, such as nitrate salts, those found in vegetables such as beetroot juice, spinach, celery, and arugula are found to exceed the effects of the same dose of sodium nitrate (10). This effect could be attributed to the presence of various polyphenols and antioxidants found in vegetables (10).

Knowing that vegetable-sourced nitrates had superior benefits compared to synthetic nitrates, Isagenix developed AMPED NOx with a concentrated nitrate-rich vegetable extract including beets, red spinach, and celery.

Additionally, the concentrated shot includes polyphenol-rich fruit extracts. Why Creatine Could Help You Beat the Heat

Nowadays, up to 74 percent of athletes are reportedly using creatine because of its well-researched benefits on performance. However, some athletes have concerns about using the supplement in hot or humid environments, as creatine could have a negative effect on hydration. However, new research suggests that creatine could help with thermoregulation and actually support hydration status. Here’s why:

1. Creatine Attracts Water

As an osmotically active substance, creatine attracts water. Because creatine is stored primarily in muscle tissue, supplementation often increases the amount of water muscle cells retain (1). This is a very important when it comes to exercise performance.

2. Increased Fluid Helps With Thermoregulation

It’s well noted in exercise science that changes in total-body water can have profound effects on performance and body-temperature processes, termed “thermoregulation” (2). Previous studies have demonstrated that dehydration impairs aerobic performance, maximal strength, and anaerobic muscular power (3). In hot and humid environmental conditions, increased sweating and core temperature can lead to dehydration and cardiovascular strain (4).

In the average human body, total-body water varies between 45 and 75 percent of body mass (2). This amount is influenced by such factors as muscle and fat mass, fitness level, and glycogen stores (2). Up to 60 percent of total body water resides inside cells. This is called intracellular fluid. The remaining extracellular fluid, outside of the cells, is composed of blood plasma and interstitial fluid (2).

Interestingly, when exercising in hot and humid environments, an increase in intracellular fluid volume can improve thermoregulation. Essentially, the more hydrated your muscles, the better you can control body temperature.

The role that creatine plays is in storing extra water in the muscle cells to transfer into plasma if necessary. The more water in the plasma increases the more fluid in circulation. This can both prevent dehydration and improve thermoregulation by dissipating heat (5). Not surprisingly, creatine has been reported to slow the increases in core temperature during exercise in the heat (6).

3. Supplementation May Support Heat Tolerance

Based on the results of multiple studies, there’s no clinical evidence that creatine supplementation, when taken in recommended dosages, will increase the risk of dehydration and heat illness (7). On the contrary, as an osmotically active substance, creatine supplementation may decrease the risk of heat illness by lowering exercising core body temperature (6).

In addition, performance benefits include maximal strength, vertical jump height, soccer-specific skills, swimming performance, repeated sprint performance, anaerobic running capacity, resistance training volume, and delaying fatigue (7). Now, add supporting athletes with hydration and heat tolerance. This effect alone may be critical for improving performance times in a variety of indoor and outdoor sports alike.

Once again, creatine is found time and time again to be safe and effective (7). Numerous studies have supported the use of creatine as a sports supplement with demonstrated improvements in performance.
